The evolution of Floppy disks to Promotional USB Flash drives

A promotional USB flash drive consists of a flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface. It sounds technical when you put it like that but a promotional USB flash drive has lots of uses. For example, it is used to transport personal data, it is used to store brand and product promotion and most importantly it is also used to back up files.

The Floppy Disk Vs USB Flash Drives

Most desktop and laptop computers were supplied with a floppy disk drive until 2005 when floppy disk drives were abandoned in favour of USB ports. One of the first promotional USB flash drives came available on 15th December 2000, just in time for Christmas. When they first became available they only had a storage capacity of 8MB (compared to 8GB and over we have today). However, this was more than five times the capacity of the then-common floppy disks.

A USB flash drive was first named and sold as “ThumDrive” and “DiskOnKey”. Eventually, the name USB flash drive took over. It is in some cases shortened to just USB as it’s easier to say in conversation.

Why Choose A Promotional USB Flash Drive For Your Marketing Campaign?

The advantages of a USB flash drive is that the data stored on the flash drive is resilient to scratches and dust. A promotional USB flash drive is robust this makes them suitable for transporting data from place to place. A flash drive consists of a small printed circuit board carrying the circuit elements and a USB connector, insulated electrically and protected inside a plastic, metal, or rubberized case which can be carried in a pocket or on a key chain, for example. The USB connector may be protected by a removable cap or by retracting into the body of the drive, although it is not likely to be damaged if unprotected.

A USB flash drive is much smaller and much faster compared to floppy disks and CD-ROMS. USB flash drives also have lots more capacity and are more durable and reliable because of their lack of moving parts. This means that your brand can be promoted time and time again over a long period of time. A recent study published by the BPMA shows that almost half (43%) of consumers keep a promotional USB flash drive for 2 years or longer!

Today there are a number of different USB flash drives around, some small, some large and some even come with a pencil on the end. So whatever your favourite colour, shape or size, you can be sure a promotional USB flash drive can be completely bespoke to your brand.
