What is Road Safety Week?

Firstly, it's the UK's biggest road safety event. Founded by the British road awareness charity, Brake, the campaign is also sponsored by Arval, DHL and Openreach and the event supports the Department for Transport's Think! campaign.

Every year, thousands of schools, organisations, and communities come together to promote the importance of the UK population having safe daily journeys. With this year's theme being road safety heroes, the week is to celebrate the heroic work of road safety professionals, and explain how we can all play a part in making journeys safer for everyone.

So, how can you get involved and show your support? Brake shares a number of different ways schools, organisations, emergency services and road safety professionals, and road crash victims can all directly be a part of the campaign. We also have a few ideas of our own...

Enter, high-visibility items - from glow in the dark umbrellas to hi-vis vests, we've got everything you and your customers could need to be more visible on the roadside.

Printed Hi-Vis and Reflective Items for Schools

Ensuring your educational establishment has the necessary road safety practices in place and teaches children of all ages the importance of road safety are vital because:

  • Road accidents are the leading cause of death for children globally.
  • In the UK, more than six children are killed or seriously injured in road crashes every day.
  • Most child casualties on the road occur between the school run hours.
  • A quarter of road traffic casualties are 13 to 15 year-olds.

Although the UK has some of the safest roads in the world and the country has seen a significant reduction in annual child casualties since the 1970s, the facts speak for themselves and highlight just how relevant road safety awareness is and continues to be across UK schools.

One product that is quintessential for primary schools is the Enhanced Vis School Bag. Retaining the classic school bag design, these bags boast a reflective panel and fluorescent binding for improved visibility in the darker months. Choose the colour that fits with your pupil's uniform and decorate these bags with your school crest or logo for a tidy and professional look.

Are you also after a bag that is suitable for students' pe kits and has an added road safety feature? Look no further than the Celsius Reflective Drawstring Bag, perfect for carrying sports gear to and from school and made from high-visibility colours with a reflective band for increased visibility in darker conditions.

Branded Reflective and Hi-Vis Products for Organisations

As an employer, making sure your employees are up to date with roadside awareness is important because:

  • More than 1.3 million people die on the roads every year, with many of these casualties happening when driving from work.
  • Driving for work is one of the most dangerous activities you ask your staff to do.
  • Road traffic accidents account for 39% of work-related deaths in the EU.

Of course, road safety management is even more vital if your employees drive for their work (e.g. van and lorry drivers). There are strict laws in place that employers must abide by to ensure their workforce are as safe as possible during their working hours, but it would be beneficial to take additional measures within your employment, such as better journey planning and keeping vehicles well maintained.

Road safety awareness is not limited to workplaces mentioned above, even if your employees aren't tasked with driving as part of their roles and responsibilities many people are required to commute to work. Whether their commute is a walk or cycle to the office, or travelling via car or public transport, being aware of the risk involved whilst on the road is still just as important; arming your staff members with high-visibility and reflective items can be essential in ensuring their safety to and from work.

A popular and effective choice with UK businesses is the Safety Reflective Vest. Well known and worn worldwide, these simple vests play a huge role in roadside safety. These vests are specifically designed for health and safety reasons by boasting fluorescent coloured backgrounds and reflective strips and once printed with your logo or business name they show your employees you have their welfare at the core of the business.

If you are aware that a number of your employees cycle to work then these Hi Vis Bicycle Spoke Reflectors are a brilliant gift. Easy to attach and remove when no longer need these reflectors are small but mighty high-visibility items for travelling to and from work in darker conditions.

Similarly, our Glow in the Dark Umbrella is a fantastic option for those who walk to and from work, especially during the winter months. Each printed umbrella features two panels that are finished with a reflective coating; they look similar in colour to the other panels but once hit with light the two coated panels reflect the light. Want to make this road safety gift more personal? You can add individual names - as well as your logo - to the handle!
