Fancy a coffee? We've had word that the world's biggest coffee morning is taking place at the end of September and we've got all our promotional mugs at the ready!
Since 1990, people across the world have been taking part in the world's biggest coffee morning attempting to raise funds for the Macmillan charity. The event grew from a small local gathering at first, to a countrywide event the following year, making it the biggest coffee morning in the world!
Where Did Coffee Begin And How Has It Changed In Recent Years?
Coffee has been around for many centuries, with the first reference to the word dating back to 1598. There were variations of the drink across the world, with the word meaning wine in Arabic. This has changed over the years and now coffee is a common drink consumed in a variety of different countries.
The earliest evidence of anyone drinking coffee is in the middle of the 15th century, in the Sufi monasteries around Yemen. It was here that the coffee beans were first roasted and prepared, similarly to how it is now prepared. By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East including Turkey, Persia and Northern Africa.
Did you know that the first export of coffee was from Ethiopia to Yemen when the Yemeni traders would cultivate the seed? And, the first case of coffee smuggling was from Yemen to India in 1670. Before this date, all coffee was boiled or sterilised before it was exported. Prior to this, coffee spread to Europe and Italy in particular. In fact, the first Italian coffee house opened in 1645. This was after the Pope deemed the drink suitable for Christians. After this, the drink spread throughout Europe, to Indonesia and finally to America.
The first coffee house in Britain was opened in Oxford in 1651 and over the next 50 years, a further 3,000 coffees opened up in the country. Every man of the upper class went to a coffee shop daily to learn of local news – much different from how we learn of news today!
The story of how coffee became so popular remains a mystery, but the why seems much more obvious.
